"The Gospel Acc. to St. Arbucks: Good to the Last Dropping"
Isaiah 25:6-8
The themes for this week is extravagance: the overwhelming goodness of
God and scriptures where people have responded with extravagant generosity.
Monday: 1 Chronicles 29:16-18 (King David's prayer at
the dedication of a large offering to build the first Temple)
16 O LORD our God, as for all this abundance that we have provided
for building you a temple for your Holy Name, it comes from your hand,
and all of it belongs to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart
and are pleased with integrity. All these things have I given willingly
and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your
people who are here have given to you. 18 O LORD, God of our fathers Abraham,
Isaac and Israel, keep this desire in the hearts of your people forever,
and keep their hearts loyal to you.
Prayer thought: It all belongs to God.
Tuesday: 2 Chronicles 29:31-36 (at purification and rededication
of Temple)
31 Then Hezekiah said, "You have now dedicated yourselves to
the LORD. Come and bring sacrifices and thank offerings to the temple
of the LORD." So the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings,
and all whose hearts were willing brought burnt offerings.
32 The number of burnt offerings the assembly brought was seventy bulls,
a hundred rams and two hundred male lambs—all of them for burnt
offerings to the LORD. 33 The animals consecrated as sacrifices amounted
to six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep and goats. 34 The priests,
however, were too few to skin all the burnt offerings; so their kinsmen
the Levites helped them until the task was finished and until other priests
had been consecrated, for the Levites had been more conscientious in consecrating
themselves than the priests had been. 35 There were burnt offerings in
abundance, together with the fat of the fellowship offerings [a] and the
drink offerings that accompanied the burnt offerings.
So the service of the temple of the LORD was reestablished. 36 Hezekiah
and all the people rejoiced at what God had brought about for his people,
because it was done so quickly.
Prayer thought: We bring a sacrifice of praise.
Wednesday, Psalm 36:5-9
5 Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies.
6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the great deep.
O LORD, you preserve both man and beast.
7 How priceless is your unfailing love!
Both high and low among men
find refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your river of delights.
9 For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
Prayer thought: Let us feast on the abundance of God's house.
Thursday: Psalm 66:10-16
10 For you, O God, tested us;
you refined us like silver.
11 You brought us into prison
and laid burdens on our backs.
12 You let men ride over our heads;
we went through fire and water,
but you brought us to a place of abundance.
13 I will come to your temple with burnt offerings
and fulfill my vows to you-
14 vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke
when I was in trouble.
15 I will sacrifice fat animals to you
and an offering of rams;
I will offer bulls and goats.
Selah
16 Come and listen, all you who fear God;
let me tell you what he has done for me.
Prayer thought: I will come to your temple with abundant offerings, and
fulfill my vow to You.
Friday: 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each man should
give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make
all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all
that you need, you will abound in every good work.
Prayer thought: Lord, help me be a cheerful giver.
